Hazelnut facts

Hazelnuts are also known as filberts, or typically in the UK and Ireland, cobnuts, with a variety called the Kent Cobnut. The cobnut variety is spherical to oval, about 15-25 mm (5⁄8-1 in) long and 10-15 mm (3⁄8-5⁄8 in) in diameter, with an outer fibrous husk surrounding a smooth shell, while a filbert is more elongated, being about twice as long as its diameter.

The nut falls out of the husk when it is ripe, which is about seven to eight months after pollination, typically in October.

Turkey produces about 70% of the world's hazelnuts. In the U.S., The Willamette Valley of Oregon grows almost all (99%-plus of the U.S. hazelnut crop).

Hazelnuts are made into hazelnut butter,  such as Nutella and liquers, like Frangelico,  put into beer and liqueurs and hazelnut flour  and then made into cookies and cakes.

Hazelnuts contain particularly high amounts of protein, dietary fiber, vitamin E, iron, thiamin, phosphorus, manganese, and magnesium, all exceeding 30% DV (table). Several B vitamins have appreciable content. In lesser, but still significant amounts (moderate content, 10-19% DV), are vitamin K, calcium, zinc, and potassium (table).

The parade kicks things off at 11 a.m. There are also dozens of vendor booths. There will be raffle prizes at this year's festival. Raffle tickets can be purchased on the festival website.

  Hazelnuts rank #1 among tree nuts in folate content. This translates into a decreased risk of neural tube birth defects and may help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and depression.  Hazelnuts have the highest proanthocyanidin content of any tree nut. These compounds are known for contributing astringent flavor to foods and may help reduce the risk of blood clotting and urinary tract infections.  Hazelnuts provide dietary fiber. An ounce of raw hazelnuts has 2.7 grams of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is a cholesterol-lowering nutrient and may prevent constipation because of its laxative effect, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Healthy adults on a 2,000-calorie diet should aim for at least 28 grams of dietary fiber. Hazelnuts are particularly high in two minerals: manganese and copper. • Qazvin Hazelnut Festival - 
  One of the old traditions of Alamut region is that girls would make necklaces out of fresh hazelnuts before the husk hardens, and keep them until winter to give them to their husband or fiancé. The necklaces are called Golwaneh.
  Fandogh-chin festivals during the harvest season in Iran. Qazvin's Hazelnut festivals happens in several villages in the province of Qazvin. The Fandogh-chin festivals celebrate the great harvest and blessings of God. They also bring tourists and exhibit the cultural and natural attractions of the region.

• Avella Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival - October.
  Traditional hazelnut and chestnut products from Irpinia and Campania. On a weekend of October, Avella, in the Province of Avellino, hosts the Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival. In 2022 for the 9th edition, the socio-cultural association "I Rami del Melo" celebrates Avella's long-standing agricultural tradition, whose main protagonist has always been the hazelnut, as its name can attest. In Spanish, in Portuguese and in Occitan, ‘hazelnut' is called ‘avellana', ‘avelã' and ‘avelana' respectively, while in Latin ‘nux abellana' means ‘hazel'. The event starts on Friday evening, with stands and music entertainment. On Saturday and Sunday morning, visitors can go on free guided tours of Avella's wonderful historic sites: the Roman Tombs and Amphitheatre, the Norman Castle, Palazzo Ducale. Starting at 8 pm, Pizzica and Taranta Night (Saturday) and Folk Night (Sunday), with music and dancing. For the entire duration of the Festival, crafts market, and exhibition and tastings of traditional products from Irpinia and Campania, such as chestnuts, mushrooms, DOP olive oil. Moreover, in Piazza Municipio, tastings of excellent wines and craft beers, as well as local dishes: anchovy and nuts linguine, porcini mushrooms penne, wild boar ragu pasta, sausage and friarielli sandwich, beans, and cotechino, roasted chestnuts, hazelnut and chestnut desserts, nuts, raw and toasted hazelnuts.Free parking for cars, RVs and buses in Via Anfiteatro, Via De Sanctis, Via Castellana and Via San Pietro.
• Bevagna (PG, Umbria, Italy) Hazelnut Festival - early November
  The hazelnut fair-market takes place in Bevagna every year in early November, with sale of confectionery products and handicrafts made ​​from hazelnut.
• Corsica Hazelnut Festival or Fiera di a Nuciola - mid-August
  Cervione, Corsica, Italy. The little village of Cervione hosts visitors and locals to exhibit hazelnuts grown in the Castagniccia and Casinca regions of Corsica. Here visitors can taste or buy hazelnuts and learn delicious local recipes.
