I get asked about where pick-your-own coconuts are available. Well, if
you look at the photo at right, which shows how coconuts are harvested, you will quickly realize the answer is "nowhere!" At least not commercially.
But this does not mean that you cannot purchase coconuts directly from the growers, at a better proice, selection and quality. So let's look at what is available and where.
There are several principal types of coconuts avaailble to purchase:
Young Green Coconuts Green coconuts are coconuts that are not fully mature. They have a large quantity of water (which many people like to drink) and a soft pulp, which is used for cooking to give light coconut taste to drinks and candies. |
|
Brown Mature Coconuts Ripe coconuts are removed from their husks (not easy to do by hand) to reveal the nut inside. Brown coconuts have very little water, but the meat is sweeter and more solid. The meat is is used in candies, shaved and sold in packages and can be substituted for nuts and almonds in many recipes. The husk is used in the manufacture of ropes, belts, carpets, and hats .Even the coconut shell itself is used to make earrings, necklaces and bracelets, cups, bowls and buttons. |
|
Trimmed coconuts In many Asian markets throughout the world, you can find young coconuts which have the husks trimmed to protect and preserve the coconut inside, while providing easier access to it by the consumer. |
