If you are trying to start your own business, whether it is a cottage food business, home-based food business or even a regular full-fledged corporation, you will need to contact your state's secretary office state's office to make your business legal. And while there are services like LegalZoom and Nolo.com that complete the paperwork for your (typically $200 to $500) it's pretty easy to do yourself. In most cases, an LLC is the most practical type of business to start, with lower costs and easier to manage. Just go to your state's secretary of states website and use their search box to search for these phrases:

• Starting a business
• LLC
• Limited Liability Corporation
• Then you should find step by step directions about how to file the paperwork. There is usually a fee charged by your state, typically about $100.
