Notes for November 2024: Crop growth is slowing down, except for Christmas tree farms and if you live in southern California, southern Texas, Florida or along the Gulf coast where citrus are starting, and believe it or not, the blueberry and strawberry season in those areas is about to begin. See your state harvest calendar . This year, much of the country is still seeing mild weather, so lettuce, peas, broccoli, cabbage and other greens are thriving. And this is a good time to get a canner and learn how to preserve foods for the winter, like canning some applesauce, apple butter or jam, which make great gifts. My family and I have always gone there to pick pumpkins, however in the last year we have started taking advantage of all the other produce they have to offer. I had 4 boys with me (ages 6-8) and we spent nearly 4 hours picking 12 lbs of cherries (ladders were provided and moved for us) 5 lbs of strawberries and 56 pea pods (cause the boys just wanted to try fresh peas). There are tractor rides out to all the picking areas and boxes to use. We have also picked apples and peaches there as well. Bring a hat, and though they provide water out in the fields bring you own water bottle. If you ask for directions-not to far from the farm is the family restaurant that has wonderful local fare but save room for the pie! "
Comments from a visitor on September 19, 2009: "Picked apples today at Baughers Orchard and had a blast! Though there were a lot of people there, we had no trouble finding parking and then took a tractor ride to the orchard. There are at least three different play sets for young kids (elementary and younger) on the grounds, a petting zoo with a sink and soap for washing up after visiting the animals, and a country store with baked goods and ice cream. And the pick-your-own apples are very reasonably priced. A great place to take the whole family! "

Pick your own apples at Gaver Farm! Pick apples from the farm�s beautifully trellised apple trees- grown so you can easily pick without the use of ladders. Varieties available include Blondee, Buckeye, Ultra Gold, Crimson Crisp, Empire, Cameo and Fuji (bolded varieties are what we are picking NOW). The Orchard is OPEN on fall Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm.
Purchase a peck (in 2022, $25) or half bushel (in 2022, $40) bag in the Farm Market, Admission Barn or Apple Orchard entrance. You may only enter the orchard if you have purchased a bag, limit 4 people per bag. Kids under 2 are not included in 4 person limit. Vanessa red table grapes and Neptune white table grapes. Grapes were (in 2020) .99 per lb and they are sweet, juicy and delicious. We have u pick available and there will also be some picked and ready for you to buy in the store. Available for only a short time, starting in mid to late July. Also open until 9pm for evening maze walks October 29 - 31. Directions: off Route 5, 1 1/2 miles from intersection with Route 235, Mechanicsville. Haunted hayrides, offered during the maze's evening hours, are $3. Picnic tables are available. They have TONS of strawberries, the lady who owns it is always very friendly, they don't mind that our youngest son eats all the berries he picks and their prices are wonderful, especially for organic strawberries. They do not use pesticide or herbicides and will only use a fungicide if absolutely necessary due to very wet or very humid conditions. They are not certified organic but farm as organically as possible."
